High Water in Otter Tail County - 7/3/07

How much water can Otter Tail County hold?  We have a real high water problem in Otter Tail County.  It has been creeping up over the past 10 years, and has reached a point of concern.  It is eroding away shore land, flooding farm land, covering up roads, and damaging buildings. There are several theories on why this is happening, and when it might stop.  Most of it appears to be an act of God, and occasionally we may be confronting a man made problem.

It certainly is a cause of frustration for land owners.  It is a handful for government officials who are trying to contain the water, help the citizens, and protect the environment.  This is not only effecting individual land owners, and small businesses; it is becoming costly for townships, counties and has potential to be a head ache for the state as well.  I have been getting several calls...from constituents, and government officials.  I have gone out and looked at several high water problems...I am beginning to make a list of troubled areas in the county.  Also Representative Bud Nornes and myself will be meeting with state officials and county representatives on July 13th to try to develop a strategy to handle high water issues.  I will try and give you an update on our meeting when we have something to report.  Or you can go to the contact me section on this web page and request more information and I will try and keep you up to speed.

It is important to remember that we are in the early stages of confronting this problem, and results may take time.  If you have ideas, or concerns let me know. - Dan
