Bipartisan option to
prevent closure - 4/21/10
To the Editor:
When the old system of state hospitals was ended, there was a promise that a full, high-quality array of community-based services would remain to provide care for people with disabilities, mental illness, chemical dependency, and traumatic brain injuries.
With that backdrop, it was disheartening to see a proposal from Governor Pawlenty to close a dental clinic in Fergus Falls, downgrading the Wadena Community Health Hospitals, as well as close a number of other facilities around the state. All in all, more than 200 jobs would have been lost, mostly in outstate Minnesota.
I'm working on a plan that would keep these facilities open, while meeting the need to balance the state budget.
I'd like to single out Senator Dan Skogen for his advocacy on behalf of patients and staff in Fergus Falls and Wadena. With his help, we have been developing a plan that will be a strong, bipartisan option to prevent closure. We expect to bring it up for a vote in the very near future, and are working with the governor's office on provisions that he would be willing to sign into law.
Sincerely, Senator Linda Berglin

Congratulations to the City of Henning
for being named a Fit City - 5/8/08
To the Editor:
Earlier this week, Governor Pawlenty and the Minnesota Department of Health
designated Henning a Governor’s Fit City for their ongoing efforts to
improve the health and well-being of the community. I wish to
congratulate the city’s leaders, staff and residents on this
impressive accomplishment.
The City of Henning exhibited tremendous leadership by voluntarily
creating a long-term Fit City plan, which includes focusing on
pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, developing a cohesive park and trail
system, and supporting local recreation programs. Together, these
investments will not only create a healthier, fitter city, but they will
also improve the quality of life for residents in the community.
Congratulations, again, to everyone involved in this remarkable
achievement.
Sincerely, Dan Skogen, Senator, District 10

Congratulations to local athletes- 2/26/08
To the Editor:
This week, several local student-athletes will travel to St. Paul to compete in the State High School Wrestling Tournament. I wish to join family, friends and the community in congratulating these athletes, their coaches and their schools.
The New York Mills Eagles and the Frazee-Vergas Hornets are both competing in the Class A tournament. The Eagles, coached by Eric Niemi, have won 17 of 22 matches going into the tournament, finishing with a 5-1-0 conference record. This is New York Mills fourth appearance in the tournament.
The Hornets, coached by John Barlund, are seeking their fourth state title, after finishing as runners-up in the previous two tournaments. The team has a long history of success at the state tournament, winning the championship in 1992, 1999, and 2002.
Coach Robb Moser will lead Perham into the Class AA tournament. The Yellowjackets finished the season with a stellar 25-0-4 overall record, going 4-0-1 in the Heart O' Lakes conference. The team, which made it to the championship round last year, is making its second consecutive and fourth overall appearance.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Perham Girls Gymnastics team, which recently won the Class A State Championship. The team, which placed first in every event, also had two of the tournament's top three individual performers - Kelsi Vomacka and Miranda Schmitz.
The ability of these students to balance academics, extracurricular activities and family life is truly inspirational. Once again, congratulations and best wishes to all of our region's competitors!
Sincerely, Dan Skogen, Senator, District 10

Congratulations to Timber Roots of Wadena - 8/3/07
To the Editor:
Congratulations to the management and employees at the Timber Roots production facility in
Wadena for becoming a Minnesota Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (MNSHARP)
worksite. By making worker safety a top priority, Timber Roots has earned the respect
and appreciation of our community.
The MNSHARP designation, awarded by the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration
program, recognizes companies where management and staff have worked together to develop enhanced
safety programs that result in an immediate and long-term reduction of job-related injuries and
illnesses. To receive this award, Timber Roots voluntarily worked with industry experts
to identify and control workplace hazards, and to design a safety training and education program
for employees.
The MNSHARP designation identifies Timber Roots as a company that is committed to ensuring
the safety and well-being of its employees. Their dedication to being a strong
corporate citizen in our community is inspiring.
Sincerely, Dan Skogen, Senator, District 10
